Juice my Grass?
Steve Meyerowitz, in "Wheatgrass,
Nature's Finest Medicine" explains it this way:
"The wheatgrass juicer is actually a screw press. Unlike conventional vegetable juicers that tear or cut vegetable fibers into tiny fractions, the grass juicer presses and squeezes the pulp, much like wringing the wetness out of your laundry. Conventional juicers are simply not designed to handle the woody, ligneous fibers of grass and , besides, they operate at such high speeds, sensitive enzymes would oxidize immediately. Regular juicers destroy the nutritional value of grass, but that's not all... are also unworkable. The green blades will wrap around the steel blades strangling your blender to death. Even if it survives, the high speed blades aerate and heat up the grass, and don't make much juice anyway."
I've always used a wheatgrass juicer. Fortunately, now you can buy manual juicers (link to purchase). When I started juicing, the cheapest juicer was $200. And my brother and sisters would fight over who was going to take it from my parents. They always had one around and it would always wind up missing when one of us visited.
How much should I
drink?
My first question is, what is your "intention?" If
you are using it for maintenance, about 1-2 ounces a day is fine. If
you are looking for healing or detox, up to 6 ounces a day,
depending on your weight and age, would be great. There
are also other ways to use the juice of wheatgrass.
I feel lightheaded and
nauseous when I drink my wheatgrass juice?
Wheatgrass
juice is a powerful cleanser and may cause nausea through starting
an immediate reaction with toxins and mucus in the stomach. There
are many schools of thought about nausea. I believe it is toxins in
your body. Those toxins could be emotional or physical. Start with
drinking an ounce. Gradually build up to more. Sip it, don't gulp
it. Chase it down with a little water. Sit down, rest... you are
feeling lightheaded, take it easy. Let the juice do the work it is
designed by nature to do. HEAL!!!
After 20 minutes, eat something light. I do suffer from nausea at times. These hints work for me.
Can I mix it with
orange juice?
If the taste isn't pleasant at first for
you, try to sip it, and chase it with a small sip of water. For
optimal results, wheatgrass juice should be taken alone, on an empty
stomach. Do not eat for at least 20 minutes after drinking. In her
book, "The Wheatgrass Book", Ann Wigmore gives some recipes for
wheatgrass juice, mixing it with other green juices or vegetables.
If I was using wheatgrass juice for maintenance, then yes, I would,
and have, mixed it with my cucumber
juice, however, if you are using it for healing, the best is a
straight shot.
I was feeling great for awhile
drinking my wheatgrass juice, now I seem to be getting worse. What's
up?
Some reactions are temporary. My personal experience
with healing in general, has been that sometimes whatever I am
working on, be it physical or emotional, will get more extreme
before it gets better. These reactions I see as a positive sign.
Your body is cleansing itself of what it no longer needs. Try using
less wheatgrass juice, or dilute with water, or take a break for a
day. You
could also use the juice or a poultice in other ways outside the
body.
I've heard wheatgrass juice can
cure cancer. Is that true?
The following is from Ann
Wigmore's book "The Wheatgrass Book":
"While wheatgrass juice helps to build immunity, its beneficial effects range much further. Preliminary studies have identified a number of substances in wheatgrass juice that are formidable anti-cancer agents. One of these is called abscisic acid. I first learned of abscisic acid from Eydie Mae Hunsberger, a former Hippocrates guest who used the Hippocrates Diet and wheatgrass juice to heal herself of malignant breast cancer."
Certainly there are many stories from individuals who have healed
themselves from a variety of dis-ease. If I were sick, I would want
to be doing everything I could to prevent and cure myself. So, to
that end, I would continue my living food lifestyle, maybe visit a
healing retreat such as Hippocrates Health Institute in Florida, and
make informed decisions in my health care. Ultimately, you are the
only one who can cure yourself. Your mind, your attitude and your
diet, are just a few of the things that can help.
Why can't I chew and swallow the
grass?
It would take a lot of chewing to be able to get
the amount of juice you would get from juicing. Our jaws are not
intended for chewing grass. Humans cannot digest grass fiber.
Animals have different digestive systems. They will chew until it is
liquid and then swallow the fiber, thereby reaping the full benefit
of grass. However, even in animals, most of the fiber will come out
in “the end”.
What about Frozen or Powdered
Wheatgrass?
There really is no substitute for fresh
wheatgrass juice. There are many good alternatives, but no
substitute. What are you trying to achieve? Are you healing dis-ease
or using it for preventative measures? Don?t forget all the other
benefits from the juice and the pulp of wheatgrass. However, we do
know that sometimes freshly juiced wheatgrass is not available to
you. That is why we started this business, to make the process that
much easier for you to have fresh wheatgrass juice every day by
either growing it yourself or buying ours.
